Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) is most commonly used in the field of analytical chemistry for the identification and quantification of non-volatile metabolic compounds and pesticides. However, because of its limitation to only identification and quantification of targeted compounds, not all components within a sample can be analyzed. The newest innovation in liquid chromatography is the Orbitrap LC-MS/MS system because of its analytical capability of detecting targeted, unidentified, and unknown compounds in complex matrices at trace levels. A typical triple-quad LC-MS system is only able to measure the mass to charge ratio of a known compound, unlike the Orbitrap LC-MS/MS system that can measure the mass to charge ratio along with its intermediate by-products allowing for higher resolving power and identity confirmation.
