Heavy Metals Analysis

A commonly used instrument, Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) works through measuring the excited atoms and ions that match the wavelengths of the metal elements. Many metal elements can be analyzed using ICP-OES, but more accurate measurements are achieved through an Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) due to its higher sensitivity and lower limits of detection. An ICP-MS analyzes a sample by measuring an atom’s mass to charge ratio. ICP-MS allows for lower detection limits in parts per trillion which translates to greater accuracy, whereas the lower limit of detection for an ICP-OES is parts per billion. The ICP-MS is the best system for metals testing because of its ability to handle high throughput samples, isotopic analysis, and quantitative analysis. Konocti Analytics offers metals analysis using ICP-MS.
